About

I created this site to document my journey learning plant identification. Many field positions require knowledge and experience with plant identification and dichotomous key use, so I decided to teach myself. As I learn, I’m recording what I find and what I’ve learned along the way, both as a reference for myself and as a way to share the process. The plant ID skills not only help with future employment pursuits, but they also enrich my hiking and backpacking experiences. As I travel on foot through beautiful landscapes, the flora helps me understand and connect with each place in a new way.

The first books I bought were Botany in a Day and Plant Identification Terminology: An Illustrated Glossary, with the goal of identifying flowering plants by family. I have since added region-specific guides to my plant identification arsenal and am working towards identifying flower plants by genus and species as well.
